National Park

The park is in an area of the mountains 3 miles away from Kalaw. It was established as a water reservoir 100 years ago by the British. Today it covers an area of 1800 acres that has remained practically untouched until recently.

Extensive hunting and logging began to endanger the area. So, in 2007 the Amara Resort decided to protect the forest as its own project. Funded by the income generated at the Amara Resort Kalaw, we are now caring for this special place of unique dense mountain forest inhabited by hundreds of bird species and a variety of mammals, reptiles and insects. In the middle of the forest there is a lake with many fish. Many different kinds of wild orchids can be found in the park that is now protected by 8 mountain rangers, equipped and paid by the Amara Resort Kalaw. Our goal is to raise the awareness of this natural treasure among the people in this region through conversation.

The area with its natural resources invites the wildlife enthusiast for observation and adventure trekking in this remarkable preserve. We offer guided tours and, upon request, we can arrange overnight stays by tent.

More than 400 bird species have been counted: Great Hornbill, Hoopoe, Greater Flameback Woodpecker…

Many different mammals including leopard, wild boar, barking deer, small cats, monkeys, flying squirrels are inhabitants of the forest as well as turtles, lizards and snakes.

Our project has long term goals:

Involvement of students from Myanamar Universities

Counting and registration of animals and plants

Park extension

Involvement of neighboring villages in the project

Increasing income for the area due to more tourists

Increasing the awareness of the local people for the environment

Example for further eco-friendly projects
